Back/Reverse: When a move/trick is initiated by the first movement going in a backward or reverse direction.
Example; Back flip is a flip going backwards or reverse corkscrews are corkscrews where the rider is riding backwards into and throughout the spin.
Front/Forward: When a move/trick is initiated by the first movement going in a forward direction.
Example; Front side flip is a flip started initially by laying forward before throwing the outside knee up and across the body causing the rider to make a front sideways looking finish.
Inside: Executing a move/trick or turn on your inside shoulder, towards the PWC. The PWC is always on the inside shoulder when circling the PWC.
Example; Rider A prefers to do corkscrews on his inside shoulder, or turning towards the PWC.
Outside: Executing a move/trick or turn on your outside shoulder, away from PWC. The opposite shoulder/side furthest away from the PWC is the outside shoulder when circling the PWC.
Example; Rider B prefers to do corkscrews on his outside shoulder, or turning away from the PWC.
Pause: The stall or stop in motion in between moves or transitions. Continuous movements have no pause and are typically smooth whereas moves that have a pause can look jointed.
Example; A Double Back flip without pause tends to be fairly quick and gives the loops in the hose a melt away type of look. A Double Back flip with a pause in it usually sits two loops side by side and in some instances can look dragged out if the rider pauses too long in between flips.
Set: Stabilizing, settling or flattening the board. Most ‘Sets’ or ‘Setups’ typically occur before initiating a move/ trick, combo or in between transitions.
Hose Management: The ability to place yourself in a position that allows you to maintain control of the board and hose without disturbing the PWC. Generally body position is a major factor in hose management but adjustment via the throttle control plays a massive part as well.
HYDROFLIGHT TRICK NAMES
DOLPHIN DIVE: Diving forward into the water. A singular trick or in succession. Some refer to a stylized dive as ‘swagged out’.
REVERSE DOLPHIN: Diving backwards into the water from any height.
BACKFLIP TO DOLPHIN: A move requiring transition from one to another.. Starts by completing a full backflip while clearing the water and then immediately going in a dolphin.
SPINNER DOLPHIN OR BARREL ROLL: When you’re executing dolphins and you add a twist in the air as you continue diving forward.
MISSILE: A half rotation on a backflip leading to completely vertical dive with head first entry.
ONE AND A HALF: The rider completes a backflip and throws another half rotation leading to completely vertical dive with head first entry.
720: Two consecutive spins while constantly increasing in elevation.
1080: Three consecutive spins while constantly increasing in elevation.
720 NOSEGRAB: Similar to the 720 Spiral but with the nose of the board being grabbed to accent the trick while executing it.
1080 NOSEGRAB: Similar to the 1080 Spiral but with the nose of the board being grabbed to accent the trick while executing it.
REVERSE TORNADO: 3 or more consecutive spins while constantly increasing in elevation commenced from flying backwards / in reverse.
Squat Spin: Spinning either direction more than 360 degrees while in a full seated squat.
BACKFLIP: Single back flip where the athlete clears the trick without the board touching the surface of the water.
BACK TO BACK: Two back flips done in succession during a single descent. This is identified specifically by the ‘pause’ between the first and second back flip.
LAYOUT BACKFLIP – Single back flip where the rider opens up and holds that position until landing it. Typically.
DOUBLE: Double back flip where the rider flips backwards twice without pause (stays tucked) and clears the trick without the board touching the surface of the water.
TRIPLE: Triple back flip where the rider flips backwards three times without pause (stays tucked) and clears the trick without the board touching the surface of the water.
DOUBLE SIDEWINDER – A Callon Burns specialty back in 2014, this is a double backflip sees the riders feet follow an inside path, tilting the body on a 45 degree angle for both rotations.
720 FLIP: Two consecutive spins immediately transitioning into a back flip.
720 DOUBLE: Two consecutive spins immediately transitioning into a double back flip.
(Executed by Pro Flyboarder Damone Rippy)
DOUBLE to 720: Landing a double back flip and immediately delivering a 720 spin out of it.
1080 FLIP: Three consecutive spins and/or corkscrews with immediate transition into a back flip.
MISTY FLIP: Similar setup to the back flip, laid out on a 45° angle.
BONSAI FLIP : A sideflip that begins with a brief forward movement of the opposite shoulder towards opposite knee before twisting sideways and landing the flip in the same direction it was initiated.
THREAD THE NEEDLE: Back flip followed by an exit through the inside loop of the hose.
Jetboard – Other
SLALOM: Moving the Flyboard aggressively side to side while maintaining forward momentum. Each slalom puts the Flyboard jets almost 90’s degrees to the water’s surface.
SUPERMAN: Flying forward as if laying out into a dive which brings your body parallel to the waters surface and then pulling your feet back underneath you so you fly out of it without falling.
(360 Superman, 720 Superman, 1080 Superman) these are now possible on indy feet boards.
REVERSE: Controlled flying backwards. Riders can fly backwards into spins which results in a Reverse 360 or Reverse 720 ..etc
DOG CHAIN: When a Flyboard rider dives so high and aggressive that before they enter the water the hose runs out of slack, pulls tight, and snaps the FlyBoarder back, generally causing a belly-flop style entry into the water. (This is not something any hydroflight athlete wants to do but it occasionally happens.)
SKI GRAB – Rider positions themselves at the back of the ski and grabs the seat with one hand then lays out parallel to the water and holds that position for 2+ seconds.
TWISTER: Stall the hose, no movement, and perform multiple 360s.
TAIL WALK: Standing up/ coming out of the water goofy (backwards) and performing small kicks forwards and backwards. (Inspired by actual dolphins doing the same sort of movement which is referred to as a tail walk)
SERPENT: Consecutively throwing the board from forwards into reverse while ascending. The execution of the Serpent needs to establish a hose trail during the ascent in the shape of an ‘s’.
BOARD GRABS: We utilize the full range of snowboard grabs for any board grabs, accepting the leading foot as the foot in which the rider is flying. Eg. Turn right (right foot leading, left foot trailing). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_snowboard_tricks – full directory of board grabs on this page. (Grabs will need clarifying as there are a lot of variations listed on the link above and so a list of Flyboard grabs will be necessary to identify.)
SIGNATURE JETBOARD TRICKS
PRAYAS – The Single Front Flip. Successfully landed for the first time by Stéphane Prayas it wipe out the idea that this front rotation was impossible.
KORU – Gemma Weston named her incredibly quick forward barrel roll the Koru.
INFINITY FLIP – Cooper Riggs unleashed this flip variation at the 2014 X Dubai Flyboard World Cup. The rider side flips one direction, then immediately side flips back the opposite direction.
FALLEN ANGEL – Andrew Salvador drew cheers with this back dive from the hoses full height. Body position is totally straight and dive angle almost straight down. Head first entry with hands clasped either behind the lower back or in front.
FRONT TWIST – Jun Osada showed us this variation at the 2014 X Dubai Flyboard World Cup. A more aggressive forward rotation with the right shoulder to left knee momentum bringing the riders board up and around landing the flip in the opposite direction then what was initiated.
REVERSE 360 DOUBLE – A smooth trick from Adrian Boucher which we have seen him land cleanly even though our XDubai example in the video above has his landing touching the water. Reverse flight into a slow ascending 360 spin before transitioning seamlessly into a double backflip.
BOARD GRAB DOUBLE – Qjao Xiao of China attempted this trick at the 2014 XDubai Flyboard World Cup. There was a slight pause between the flips but a valiant attempt nonetheless. Simply a double backflip while grabbing the board with one hand.
